Beauty secrets to help you save costs before the big day

So I heard these lines a few times before. ‘’You only get married once’’; or ‘’this day only happens once’’. Those are classic lines from suppliers and vendors every time you are looking at getting a service from them and you show some dissatisfaction or disapproval about the price they are giving you in exchange for a service. I definitely agree with them however let’s just be real, while this is true, they forget to add that it’s not the end of the world and there is life after the wedding.

Anyway during the planning of my wedding, I heard this line quite a bit because well in the relationship, I was the ‘bad cop’ when it came to finances (depending on how you choose to look at it, I generally saw myself as the ‘good one’). I was always on the lookout for a better deal, a better price, anything to save a coin. Of course this has its advantages and disadvantages but I will leave that post for another day.

So today, I want to share one of the ways in which I managed to save some costs on my beauty regime. I definitely wanted to look my best at my wedding however as the days neared and the money got spent I realized I did not want to spend more and so instead of going for professional facials I came up with a way to make sure my skin still looked good and fresh without necessarily breaking the bank (P.S. Obviously I would have loved to get pampered and all, but a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do 🙂 )

Anyway here are some concoctions I used regularly that were inexpensive and left my skin in top condition:

For my healthy glow:

  1. 3 tablespoons of orange juice with half a cup of honey
  2. Apply to the face and leave on for half an hour
  3. Rinse with lukewarm followed by cold water and then moisturize

To brighten my skin:

  1. 1 teaspoon of turmeric
  2. 1 teaspoon of raw organic honey
  3. 1 teaspoon of milk or natural yoghurt

Mix everything but ensure it is a firm paste that will stick to your face; Remove all make up and apply especially under the eye. Leave for 20 minutes and then wash off with cool water. Dry your face gently and repeat after a few days.

If your skin is dry (like mine 🙂 ) you can substitute the honey with some oil such as olive oil, sweet almond or avocado oil).

I would also use different masks such as yoghurt masks where I would apply plain yoghurt on my face and leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse.I actually did this very religiously and the results were almost always instant OR the lemon mask where I would mix the juice from 1 lemon with a quarter cup olive oil.

I could definitely go on and on with the recipes but the point is, it is possible to do the home made recipes and still get similar results.

The point is as the stresses and reality of the big day fast approach, do not neglect how you look because this ultimately whether we want to believe it or not will affect how we feel on the day. And yes you may have a make-up artist to cover away the blemishes and transform you but doing these simple regimes will ensure that she/he is responsible for only accentuating your beauty on the day and not creating it.

Do you have any simple regimes or recipes you can share with me? Feel free to share your comments in the space provided below.

  1. This is very timely advice! I have, as one of the tasks on my to-do list, preparing a beauty regime. Since I generated the list from a wedding planning site, I have always glossed over that task disregarding it as one of those that do not quite apply to African brides. To date, I have made no progress at all on this front- I felt it would take too much time, money, effort etc etc. As someone who takes very little care of my skin, I do not have much advice to give. However, I feel sufficiently inspired to start working on my skin- what really got me was this sentence “And yes you may have a make-up artist to cover away the blemishes and transform you but doing these simple regimes will ensure that she/he is responsible for only accentuating your beauty on the day and not creating it.” It is the TRUTH!!!

    1. Thank you Edith. I like the fact that you have mentioned that you felt that it did not quite apply to African brides and through my blog this has now changed.
Let me know the progress as you near your wedding. All the best!

  2. Laura I love the beauty tips. I love the fact that the ingredients can form part of my grocery shopping and they are cost effective. I love that I can apply edible ingredients on my face (yummy) to make me glow and moisturized.
I intend to make this part of my facial routine. Thanks for the simple tips.

    1. I like that Vivz…yummy!! 🙂 Be sure not to eat it all off your face before it starts to work. 🙂
Let me know how it goes.
      All the best!
